Pickerington was founded as Jacksonville in 1815 and was called that for over a decade until citizens petitioned to change the city’s name to honor its founder; Andrew Pickering. The city is located in Violet Township, which got its name because of the massive amounts of beautiful purple violets that bloom in the area.
