Controlling Humidity For Maximum Comfort
Humidity Control In Your Home
When you think of humidity, the first thing that comes to mind is probably damp, stagnant summer air that makes you feel clammy and sweaty. Excess humidity can cause a lot of problems inside your home such as encouraging the growth of mold and mildew which, left untreated, can lead to major health problems. In addition, humidity can cause furniture to warp, and excessive moisture problems can lead to damp basements and foundation problems, not to mention the dank, musty odor.
Did you know that lack of humidity is equally as bad? In the winter, when you’re running the furnace, overly dry air can cause wood furniture to crack, and warping and bending around door frames; wooden floors will creak more. Your family can also experience more dry skin, chapped lips, and dry cough. A lack of humidity is just as uncomfortable as too much humidity.
There are a couple of solutions for too much humidity. First, make sure you have exhaust fans in the bathroom and laundry room, any rooms that generate moisture and humidity. Next, look into dehumidifiers. You can buy small units to use in individual rooms or add a dehumidifier to your HVAC system to extract moisture from the air throughout your home. Choose a dehumidifier with a solid ENERGY STAR rating to save on operating costs. Lastly, you can install a whole home humidity control system that regulates humidity throughout the year.
